In large forests there are always a few trees that are larger than all the others. These are called the "Mother Trees", the originators of the forests, the guardians of all that grow there.

This is a handmade, one-of-a-kind art sculpture. The central body of the lamp is made from a large gourd that is hand carved, cut, and sculpted on. The 19 branches coming from the top sport 712 leaves, all of which are hand carved and applied gourd pieces. They are attached with wire and epoxy clay and have some flexibility. Inset near the bottom of lamp are countless colored glass gems in reds, oranges, and yellows to resemble fallen leaves. The faux stone base is epoxy clay. It is painted with acrylics and sealed with a matte fixative. Inside the center  is a frosted glass shade. The entire sculpture measures 18.5" tall, 15" wide, and 14.5" deep.

The lamp is lit with an LED bulb. The bulb can be changed by unscrewing the fixture from the wooden plate affixed to the bottom of the sculpture. The black cord is 15" long and is a two-prong universal plug. It does not have an off switch - must unplug or to turn off.

"The Mother Tree" was made for the Cameron Art Museum's annual show, "The Art of Illumination." It was on display at the museum from December 2016 to January 2017.
